What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine has been around all civilizations and communities for centuries and is probably only predated by massage as a healing modality. It is one of the primary treatments in most 3rd world countries and is gaining better professional recognition in many 1st world countries as well where some of the older uses of medicinal plants have been forgotten.
At Leitrim Acupuncture we use Western Herbal Medicine as one of the treatment modalities, where possible we try to use locally grown plants, many from in and around Newtowngore. They are dispensed in a variety of ways such as
I don’t believe in Herbal Medicine, so it won’t work for me.
Herbal medicine is not voodoo or black magic, neither does one need to be the 7th son of the 7th son or to “have the cure”. Animals and babies respond very well to herbal remedies and they have no perception of what does and does not work, they also have to be taken in sufficient quantities in order for them to effect any physiological changes. It must be remembered that plants can and do cause physiological changes in the body and at times they do react with Dr prescribed medicine, a qualified herbalist will know if your herbs will react with any other medication you may be taking.
Can’t I just pick my own herbs?
Nothing is stopping you taking responsibility for your own health and I do think it should be encouraged. If
you want to pick and use your own herbs you have to be absolutely certain that they are what you think they are, just because they are natural does not necessarily mean they are safe, in the hands of a fully qualified herbalist who has been trained in the various properties, herbal medicine is completely safe.
